Everything has a lifespan, and for the average kitchen it is about 20 years. There may be exceptions to this rule but after many years of activity a kitchen can become worn, drab, and outdated.
You may have changed wall coverings, paint, and even floors over the years, but changing the cabinets is a major renovation project that can be very costly.
Not only is changing the cabinetry usually the most expensive component of a kitchen renovation, but also it will most often cause changes to plumbing, electric, flooring and may even include modifying walls and windows. Needless to say, this is how kitchen remodeling can easily reach the national average of 45 thousand dollars and most often much more.
Although it is possible to improve the appearance of old cabinets by washing & waxing or sanding & refinishing, in most instances they will not look anywhere near as good as new cabinets or new cabinet refacing.
If your kitchen cabinets are looking dowdy, do not despair. By making some simple changes to improve the efficiency of your existing cabinet layout (if needed) and then refacing the cabinets, you can have a beautiful new-looking kitchen for a fraction of the cost of ripping everything out and replacing it.
Cabinet refacing is a process where older cabinets are transformed by removing old doors, drawer fronts, hinges, handles, and mouldings, and replacing them with:
· New custom sized doors
· New drawer fronts
· New high-quality self-closing hinges
· New drawer handles
· New drawer boxes with the new quiet “euro” slides
The cabinet face frames, sides, and other visible areas are laminated with top quality laminate to match the door color. Then add new mouldings and the finished appearance is that of a new quality kitchen.
Today there are wonderful new materials that can be looked at when considering a new countertop. Be sure to check out our products page where we describe the countertop materials we use. Replacing the countertop is often done during kitchen refacing, but if the countertop is in good condition it isn’t necessary to replace it now. That can be done at a later time if you wish.
Modifications of the moving parts in the kitchen such as upgrading drawers and drawer slides, or replacing a worn-out lazy susan can be done during kitchen refacing as well if needed.
We saw that cabinet refacing solved a number of problems for homeowners. Because top quality cabinets can be surprisingly expensive, people were going to manufacturers of lesser-quality cabinets to replace the cabinets in their home, when all they really wanted to do was change the color of their cabinets, or change the doors and drawer fronts because they were worn and discolored.
But when buying new cabinets they were often replacing very well made cabinets with those of a lesser quality.
Cabinet manufacturers realize that the outward appearances and the price are the main factors the average kitchens cabinet buyer considers, and this is why they concentrate on putting the bulk of the cabinet quality into doors and frames, while neglecting the cabinet cases, shelves, sides, tops, and bottoms which are most often of very low quality.
This is why your 20-year-old cabinets are often better made then most new cabinets you can buy today.
Now you can have the best of both worlds with cabinet refacing by IKS, Inc. When using your existing quality cabinets, and adding quality refacing, the result is a better finished product for MUCH less money.
Regardless of the style of your present kitchen, the newly refaced version can be virtually any style you want.
A classic 1960s built-in kitchen with plain birch plywood doors, can be transformed into an elegant classic white kitchen, or even a cherry, maple, or oak style kitchen with traditional raised panel doors.
A kitchen with dark cabinetry - common in the 1970s - can become light, clean, and stylish with natural maple colors.
Pick the color, pick a door style, maybe even hide the hinges for a Euro type look - whatever it may be, IKS can help you get the great look you want at a very reasonable cost.
In some instances, the existing cabinets are so poorly made that they do not provide a suitable foundation for refacing. If they only need minor repair or minor cabinet rebuilding, we do this kind of repair work all the time.
If your original kitchen is poorly designed or you are planning extensive changes in the layout, refacing may not be the best solution.
That is not to say, however that you cannot make some minor modifications to improve the layout, flow or efficiency of your kitchen when planning kitchen refacing.
We will be glad to go over a design checklist with you and see if there are design changes you wish to make. Reface remodeling can be a workable option in better than 75% of kitchens today.
